Captain

Currently, we don't have a team captain in the rules. However, I think most of the teams know who their captain is and probably some referees even sometimes talk to the team captain even though he / she does not exist.

I think we should introduce a team captain.

Why? Here are a few reasons (similar to other sports):
- Drawing the team that starts the penalty shootout should be done by the captains
- Allowed to talk to the referee more and more direct without receiving a penalty for backtalking
- Other duties where a representative of a team is necessary

I see no issue with requiring a captain. It likely would need a small change in the UNICON registration software to make it easy for organisers also.

Doesn't the registration software already have a field to add a captain? I think it absolutely makes sense to build on this and it'll often be good to know which player to talk to when there's issues.

That said, I do think we need to consider how this will work for B-/C-teams and mix teams. In Korea I was ref'ing a game where none of the players for one of the teams spoke English but they did have a coach I could explain some rules to. Should teams be able to nominate someone not on the field to be the captain for purposes of liaising with the ref?

Comment

Yes, already now you have to name a team captain at unicon Registrations. what kind of captain do we want to introduce?

A coach/tem spokesperson?

A player representative in a game?

In sports the captain is usually a player on the field. When the captain is substituted he hands over the captains ribbon to another player. Do we wnat to introduce such a ribbon too?

We agreed that we should add the captain to the rules. We need the captain as a contact person for the organizer and the referees. We anyway already kind of use the captain but don‘t have this in the rules, which is a clear gap.

The captain has to be part of the team but (s)he doesn‘t have to be on the field but can also be in the ‚substitution zone‘ (which we don‘t have defined but I use it here to make it clear).

The captain is marked either by an armband or a ‚C‘ on the sleeve of the shirt (this can also be taped) and has to be easily identifiable.

We didn‘t discuss the wording but agree to have a look at other sports (e.g., floorball, ice hockey).

I think we all support this

I just looked up the rules for the captain:

Particular regulations for team captains

  1. Each team shall have a team captain, who shall be marked in the match record.
The marking shall be made with a “C” in the margin. Change of the team captain shall only take place in case of injury, illness or match penalty, and has to be noted with time in the match record. A replaced team captain must not function again as team captain during the same match.

  2. Only the team captain is entitled to speak to the referees and is also obliged to assist them.
When the team captain speaks to the referees, this shall be done according to set conditions. A penalised team captain loses the right to speak to the referees, unless addressed by them, and, except when the team staff requests a time out, the team has no possibility to communicate with the referees. If considered necessary by the referees, discussions shall be taken in the corridors and not in the rink and never inside the referees’ dressing room.

Particular team captain’s equipment
1. The team captain shall wear an armband.
The armband shall be worn on the upper arm and be clearly visible. Tape is not allowed as an armband.

CAPTAIN

One (1) Captain shall be appointed by each Team, and they alone shall have the privilege of discussing with the Referees any questions relating to interpretation of rules which may arise during the progress of a Game.
The Captain shall wear the letter “C,” approximately 8 cm in height and in contrasting color, in a conspicuous position on the front of their jersey. No “Co-Captains” are permitted. One (1) Captain and no more than two (2) Alternate Captains are permitted – see Rule 6.2 – Alternate Captains.

Any Captain, Alternate Captain or any Player who comes off the Players’ Bench and makes any protest or intervention with the Officials for any purpose shall be assessed a Minor Penalty for “Unsportsmanlike Conduct”.
Rule 39 – Abuse of Officials.

Should this protest continue, they may be assessed a Misconduct Penalty, and if it further continues, a Game Misconduct Penalty shall be assessed.

A complaint about a penalty is not a matter “relating to the interpretation of the rules” and a Minor Penalty shall be imposed against any Captain, Alternate Captain or any other Player making such a complaint.
The Referee and Official Scorekeeper shall be advised, prior to the start of each game, the name of the Captain and the Alternate Captains of both Teams.

A team cannot change its Captain or Alternate Captains during a game. If a Captain is ejected from a game or cannot play the entire game because of an injury, one of the Alternate Captains must assume their duties.
If both the Captain and Alternate Captain are on the ice, only the Captain is allowed to talk to the Referee about a point of interpretation. If either the Captain or the Alternate Captain comes off the Players Bench, uninvited by the Referee, they shall be penalized accordingly.

No playing Coach or playing Team Manager or Goalkeeper shall be permitted to act as Captain or Alternate Captain.

Unicycle hockey

I don't think we need that detailed rules. I could imagine something like:

One (1) Captain shall be appointed by each Team, and they alone shall have the privilege of discussing with the Referees any questions relating to interpretation of rules which may arise during the progress of a Game. Change of the team captain shall only take place in case of injury, illness or penalty box for the remainder of the game. The team captain shall wear an armband, which shall be worn on the upper arm and be clearly visible.

One question for the armbands, do we expect organisers to provide it or should teams bring it themselves?
