Currently this section is:

4B.5.8.1 Finishes: Uphill
Riders must cross the finish line mounted on the unicycle, having both feet on the pedals. In the event of a dismount at the finish line the rider must back up, remount and ride across the finish line again.

At Unicon 20, the fastest male did the course in 5:11 minutes; the slowest was 87:34 minutes.
Fastest female was 9:07 minutes; slowest 69:49 minutes.

While I personally like to encourage people to try things, these longer times are a huge drain on the volunteers.

I suggest we add to either this section or elsewhere in this chapter an option for the organizers

There is already similar sections in other parts of the rulebook: 2D.8. 3D.13

Thoughts?

To clarify, I want to add optional cutoff time to Uphill.

Agree. Conditions do not necessarily permit spending that much time to record the times of stragglers.

  • I Suggest the cut-off should result in a "DNF" for riders that did not complete the course in time
  • Organizers should make every effort to predetermine if there will be a cut-off. In other words, allowing riders to train with that in mind
  • But even if a cut-off was not announced, organizers must still have the right to establish one, because conditions on race day might demand it
  • The cut-off time should be announced ahead of time whenever possible, but organizers should have the right to modify this time, again if conditions demand it

Any other comments? I'm going to start working on a proposal.

Will share it here first for comments.

I recommend writing and numbering this section so that it applies to all Muni racing events, as time constraints may affect any of them. It looks like the new text should fit after 4B.5.8.2, to "finish" off that section. Here's a first draft, as I imagine Connie may be busy running a large unicycle convention at the moment:

4B.5.8.3 Finishes: Time Limits

Time constraints may require limiting how long riders can be on a course. This could be determined in advance, based on an overall events schedule, or may have to be done as needed due to delays, weather or other conditions that will limit time that can be spent at the venue. If a cut-off time is planned in advance, this should be announced far ahead of time, to allow riders to prepare. Even if pre-scheduled, a cut-off time might have to be changed due to changing conditions. Riders and teams should always be notified as early as possible when changes happen. [Possibly this paragraph is too "explainey"]

In events where riders start at different times, an arbitrary cut-off or time limit allows more time for riders that started in the first wave(s) and less for the later riders. The time allowed to complete the course should be enough for fit and skilled riders to finish within the given amount of time.

[Uneven start times makes it less than equitable, but this rule is intended mainly to allow races to be finished in a reasonable amount of time. Even riders who start last should have plenty of time to finish if they are reasonably fit and skilled. So this still needs some editing...]
